Bachelor of Music in Music Education (All-Level Choral)
About This Program
The Bachelor of Music with EC-12 Teaching Certification Coral Emphasis is intended for students planning to teach music in school-based settings. Students at the University of Texas at Arlington who seek teacher certification can pursue one of three tracks: All-Level Choral, All-Level Instrumental (Orchestra), or All-Level Instrumental (Band). Students who opt for certification take courses that prepare them to teach early childhood, elementary, junior high, and high school levels.
Students interested in Texas Teacher Certification should consult the College of Education section of this catalog for the most recent changes in requirements regarding admission to Teacher Education, completion of University programs in preparation for certificate, and eligibility for certification after graduation.
This program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Competencies
- Students will achieve competency in rehearsal techniques, arranging and adapting music from a variety of sources to meet the needs and ability levels of individuals, school performing groups, and in classroom situations.
- Students will achieve competency in teaching beginning students on a variety of instruments within the techniques or survey classes (Woodwind I, Woodwind II, Low Brass, High Brass, Percussion and Strings).
- Students will achieve competency in applying analytical and historical knowledge to curriculum development, lesson planning, and daily classroom and performance activities, and relating their understanding of music with respect to styles, literature, multiple cultural sources, and historical development, both in general and as related to their area(s) of specialization.

Oral Communication and Computer Use Competence Requirements
Students majoring in music are required to demonstrate computer use and oral communication competencies.
Computer use proficiency can be demonstrated by:
- successful completion of MUSI 3394; or
- successful completion of CSE 1301 or INSY 2303; or
- passing the University computer use competency exam.
Oral communication proficiency can be demonstrated by:
- successful completion of MUSI 3308 or MUSI 3309; or
- successful completion of one of the following: COMS 1301, COMS 2305, COMS 3315
Students should discuss these options with their undergraduate advisor who may also provide a list of other courses approved by the University of meet these requirements.

Advising Resources
All UTA Music Degrees require an audition for Music Department acceptance. First time in college students may contact the Music Department advisor for general degree information and will be advised in the department starting their second semester. Transfer students should contact the Music Department Advisor prior to acceptance for general degree information and again following a successful audition for acceptance into the UTA Music Department for academic advising and clearance to enroll. Students interested in the Music Minor should contact the Music Department advisor for the Minor course sheet, and Minor approval form, and may do so at any time in the semester.
