CE 5314. ADVANCED STEEL DESIGN II. 3 Hours.

Introduction to the design and analysis of steel connections in structural systems. Topics include connection elements subject to tension, high-strength bolted connections (shear, bearing, block shear, and eccentric loading), welded connections (fillet, PJP and CJP groove, plug and slot, and combined loading), and simple and moment-resisting connections. Beam and column splices, column base plates, gusset plates for bracing and truss connections, seismic design of connections, and connections for hollow structural sections (HSS). Emphasis is on code-based design and practical applications in accordance with AISC Specifications and the AISC Steel Construction Manual. Prerequisite: CE 4348 or CE 5306.
