CE 5310. PLASTIC ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF STRUCTURES. 3 Hours.
Behavior of structural members beyond elastic range; plastic analysis of steel and concrete members and framed structures. Topics include elastic versus plastic design, ductile and non-ductile failure, plastic hinges, moment-curvature relations, ultimate load capacity, stepwise incremental and mechanism methods, and yield/failure mechanisms for various types of frames. Factors affecting plastic moment capacity such as buckling, shear, and residual stresses are examined. Nonlinear pushover and time-history structural analyses, along with AISC code provisions, are applied with emphasis on earthquake-resistant design. Prerequisites: CE 4348; or equivalent.
