Bachelor of Science Substance Use and Treatment
About This Program
The Bachelor of Science in Substance Use & Treatment (BSSUT) uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand the biological, psychological, and social aspects of substance use disorders and related behaviors. Assessment and treatment methods are based on evidence-informed practices to enable students and future professionals to understand and treat individuals, families, groups, and communities.
The BSSUT degree plan is designed to prepare you for a career in substance use treatment or to lay the foundation for you to pursue a graduate degree in a related field.
Competencies
- Transdisciplinary Foundations: upon completion, students will have an understanding of addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness.
- Practice Dimensions: upon completion, students will have an understanding of clinical evaluation; treatment planning; referral; service coordination; counseling; client, family, and community education; documentation; professional & ethical responsibilities.
Admissions Criteria
Students interested in the BSSUT must first apply to UTA or be a current UTA student and then select or switch to Substance Use & Treatment as your intended major. Once admitted to UTA or already a current UTA student, you must complete the following Substance Use & Treatment requirements before transitioning from Intended-SUT major an official SUT major:
- A “C” or better in all SUT and Social Work courses taken
- A Minimum 2.25 overall GPA
- Completion of the SUT-Intended coursework and at least 30 hours toward the required Core Curriculum

Program Completion
To complete the filed internship, students must:
- Earn a "C" or better in all BSSUT courses
- Have a minimum 2.25 BSSUT & Overall GPA
- Earn acceptable evaluations in all BSSUT courses.
