Certificate in Medical Humanities

About This Program

Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary program that explores the historical, literary, philosophical, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of medicine and health. It Includes instruction in the visual arts, social sciences, narrative medicine, cultural studies, and clinical practice. There is a common focus on creative and compassionate approaches to professional relationships and patient care.

The Certificate in Medical Humanities is relevant to a wide range of fields including healthcare, disability studies, public health, social work, and biomedical engineering.

Competencies

  1. Upon completion, students will have gained competencies for improving patient care by understanding the concrete meaning and value of the terms: hope, empathy, and compassion.
  2. Upon completion, students will have gained experience with teamwork and interpersonal collaboration related to solving complex problems in a professional arena and especially in a healthcare environment.
  3. Upon completion, students will have developed a general understanding of the ways in which the arts and humanities relate to the human condition, especially in medical contexts.


 

Curriculum

Students pursuing the Certificate in Medical Humanities may count no more than two courses from a single department toward certificate completion and at least two courses must be from the College of Liberal Arts.

Program Completion

To receive the certificate, a student must complete HUMA 3300 and three courses from the following list.  Students can count toward the certificate no more than two courses from a single department. At least two courses must be from the College of Liberal Arts.

Advising Resources

Students should meet with their advisor prior to enrolling in classes every semester.  Walk in advising sessions are available during posted office hours. Emailing the advising office is recommended for many advising issues.
