Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts (Acting)
About This Program
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts is a specialized, pre-professional degree that provides a background in the liberal arts with specialized concentrations in: Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, or Acting.
The Acting Concentration is designed for students seeking a professional career as an actor.
Students seeking the BFA elect additional courses chosen from the University and Liberal Arts core curricula outside the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance.
Competencies
- Upon completion, students will demonstrate artistic, technical, and professional practices that enable them to take roles in theatre companies, theatre productions, and theatre education settings.
- Upon completion, students will be able to analyze plays as dramatic literature, a reflection of culture, and map for performance.
- Upon completion, students will demonstrate understanding of the various production and artistic roles needed to present a theatre production.
Admissions Criteria
The aspiring undergraduate must meet the following requirements for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA):
- Participation in advisement.
- A personal interview with a designated faculty member (all students).
- A an audition and interview are required for admittance into the Acting concentration.
- Upon acceptance by the University and the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, an indication of an area of concentration (Design and Technology, Musical Theatre, or Acting) is required.

THEA 1101 fulfills the UNIV 1131 requirement for entering freshman Theatre Arts majors only. Transfer students should take UNIV 1101.

Six hours of THEA 0181 are required for the Acting concentration. Students should see their advisor regarding practicum obligations.
Oral Communication Competency
Students majoring in Theatre Arts may demonstrate competency in oral communications by taking any course approved by the Undergraduate Assembly for this purpose. Alternatively, they may demonstrate this competency by passing the University proficiency examination in oral communication.
Computer Use Competency
Students majoring in Theatre Arts may demonstrate competency in computer use by taking any course approved by the Undergraduate Assembly for this purpose. Alternatively, they may demonstrate this competency by passing the University proficiency examination in computer use.

Students should ensure prior to their appointments that they have submitted all transcripts for review. Theatre Arts & Dance students are required to schedule an appointment to receive clearance into their courses each semester. Prospective students with less than 30 college credit hours will need to contact the Division of Student Success. All students, regardless of credits, must be a UTA student with a student ID number to declare a Theatre Arts & Dance degree.
