Minor in Mexican Culture

About This Program

The Minor in Mexican Culture includes foundational courses that provide students with a solid background in the core areas of Mexican culture, as well as elective options at the 4000 level that allow students to tailor their program of study to meet their interests and academic and professional goals. Students will learn about some of the most important characteristics of Mexican culture (literature, comics, film, food, art, music, popular culture, literary journalism, feminism, Colonial documents and texts, the study and conservation of endangered Mexican indigenous languages, etc.), and the relations between cultural production and the society, and the application of that knowledge to teaching, research, translation and interpreting, as well as other professions in the healthcare, business, and government sectors.

Competencies

  1. Upon completion, students will demonstrate proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing Spanish (communication skills, critical thinking skills).
  2. Upon completion, students will demonstrate intercultural knowledge and competence in Hispanic cultures generally and in Mexican culture specifically (social responsibility, global competence, critical thinking skills).
  3. Upon completion, students will demonstrate an understanding of course content knowledge as it pertains to Mexican culture (e.g., language, literary and cultural studies, linguistics) (disciplinary knowledge, critical thinking skills).
