SPAN 3304. SPANISH FOR HERITAGE SPEAKERS I. 3 Hours.

This course is designed for heritage speakers of Spanish who demonstrate an ability to comprehend and produce Spanish but who may lack previous formal instruction in the language. Capitalizes upon students' existing language skills, expands their knowledge base, and develops their ability to read, write, and communicate more effectively in the language. Special attention is given to regional and dialectal differences. Prerequisite: Equivalent of SPAN 2314, or consent of the department.

The Certificate in Spanish Linguistics provides foundational academic preparation in Spanish for language professionals. The certificate program includes courses in the core areas of Spanish language and linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax), as well as elective options that allow students to tailor their program of study to meet their interests and academic and professional goals. Students learn about modern linguistic theory and the application of those theories to teaching, research, translation and interpreting, as well as other professions in the healthcare, business, and government sectors.
