Minor in Substance Use and Treatment
About This Program
The Minor in Substance Use Treatment (SUT) employs a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the biological, psychological, and social, aspects of substance misuse, gambling, and related behaviors. Assessment and treatment methods are based on evidence-informed practices to enable students and future professionals to understand and treat individuals, families, groups, and communities. The courses prepare graduates for careers in substance use treatment and related fields.
Competencies
- Upon completion of SUT/SOCW 3315 students will be able to Identify, describe, compare, and evaluate theories and models of substance use, misuse, and addiction.
- Upon completion of SUT/SOCW 2302 students will be able to explain development across the lifespan so as to better understand substance use at different stages of development.
- Upon completion of SUT/SOCW 3305, students will be able to use empathy and other interpersonal skills toward developing a mutually agreed-on focus of work
- Upon completion of SUT 3318, students will be able to collect, organize, and interpret client data as part of the screening, assessment, and engagement processes toward developing a treatment plan for the client.
- Upon completion of SUT 3319 and SUT 3321, students will be able to develop and implement a treatment plan.
Admissions Requirements
To select this minor, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and complete the SUT Declaration Form. Students will also be required to complete a pre- and post-assessment of learning outcomes.

- Students are required to earn a C or better in all minor courses to earn the minor.
- Students may receive minor credit through completion of any combination of SUT 1350, SUT 2350, SUT 3350, or SUT 4350 as approved by the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Social Work.
- SUT minors who are not Social Work majors; if they want to pursue Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDCi), they must add SUT 4451/ SOCW 4451 Practicum as a general elective.
