Minor in Creative Writing
About This Program
The minor in Creative Writing is offered for students who wish to pursue advanced work in creative writing as a part of their undergraduate curriculum.
Competencies
- Students completing the Minor in Creative Writing will understand the characteristics of different literary forms and will be able to emulate and innovate upon those forms in their own writing.
- Students completing the Minor in Creative Writing will be able to provide detailed and insightful feedback to peers on their writing; to analyze their own writing in response to feedback; and to refine drafts to improve clarity, style, and impact.
- Students completing the Minor in Creative Writing who have an interest in pursuing a terminal degree in the field (MFA) will be well prepared to apply to programs, receiving mentorship on their portfolios and applications.
Admissions Criteria
Students selecting the Creative Writing minor should consult first with the undergraduate advisor in their department or program for approval of the minor and then with the undergraduate advisor in the Department of English. Working with advisors, students will select a sequence of advanced courses to fulfill their minor requirements. To count toward the minor, all English courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

First time in college students must meet with the Liberal Arts advisor at the University Advising Center prior to their first semester but should meet with their program advisor after that. Transfer students should meet with their program advisor to enroll after accepting admission.
