ENGL 1375. INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING. 3 Hours.
This course introduces students to genres of creative writing through modes that are common to all of them, including language, sound, character, setting, exposition, and voice. Students will learn to appreciate, synthesize, and analyze contemporary poetry, short fiction, and creative non-fiction essays, first by learning to closely read these works as writers and then by using these learned techniques to compose creative writings of their own in various genres. Individual and class criticism of these works in a workshop setting, as well as lecture on and discussion of literary forms and techniques, will allow students to more fully comprehend revision techniques. This course satisfies the University of Texas at Arlington core curriculum requirement in creative writing.
