Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in French

About This Program

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in French is designed to deepen students' knowledge of the French language and the cultures of the French-speaking world, enhancing their careers in teaching or in any area in private or public life in which intercultural competence is essential. For students who have earned an MA degree in a related field from an accredited institution, the certificate allows them to meet minimum SACS accreditation requirements for teaching French at institutions of higher education in the State of Texas.

Competencies

  1. Upon completion, students will demonstrate intercultural knowledge and competence in French and Francophone cultures (social responsibility, global competence, critical thinking skills).
  2. Upon completion, students will demonstrate an understanding of course content knowledge as it pertains to French (e.g., linguistics, culture, literature, and area/international studies) (disciplinary knowledge, global competence, critical thinking skills).
  3. Upon completion, students will be able to design and conduct research projects and/or effectively apply current French language teaching principles (research skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills).

Admissions Criteria

Students will be accepted into the certificate program only after showing proof of proficiency in French through an already acquired degree in that language or by passing a proficiency exam. Generally, a student with a bachelor's degree in a field other than French may become an unconditionally admitted graduate student after fulfilling the upper-level requirements in the language:
