Minor in Geography

About This Program

Geography is much more than just placing labels on a map, memorizing capitals and countries or just the natural stage upon which human history unfolds. Through the Minor in Geography students will learn how to employ the lenses of place, space, and location to better understand the dynamic nature of human-environmental relationships that shape us and our planet. Geography explores connections between the distinct cultural and physical landscapes and environmental processes of the earth’s major continents and regions. Students will learn how to map and explore the earth from their own local "sense of place," to the planetary scale where a ‘bird’s eye’ view of the earth will offer you a new perspective on its oceanic and terrestrial bodies.

Competencies

  1. Upon completion, minors will be able to recognize, interpret, and evaluate spatial patterns and spatial relationships from local to global scales through written, verbal, and visual modalities.
  2. Upon completion, minors will be able to apply geographical concepts and terminology to the analysis of contemporary environmental and social issues from local to global spaces.
  3. Upon completion, minors will understand geospatial technologies as a tool for the analysis of spatial patterns and relationships.
