Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Public History
About This Program
The Certificate in Public History equips students to apply historical knowledge and methodology in non-academic settings, such as private businesses or public historical agencies (museums, preservation societies). The certificate may be pursued in conjunction with either the Master of Art in History or a Ph.D. in History.
Competencies
- Upon completion, students will be able to communicate historical insights across a a range of formats—including written, oral, and digital—in order to communicate clearly, persuasively, and with grammatically sound English appropriate to academic, public, and professional audiences.
- Upon completion, students will be able to demonstrate cultural awareness, identify bias, and produce work that meets professional standards, in order to apply historical thinking in professional contexts.
- Upon completion, students will be able to create public-facing and professional materials that demonstrate historical knowledge, interpretive skill, and career readiness for a wide range of industries—in order to develop skills needed in education, media, policy, research, and other fields that value critical thinking, analysis, and effective communication.
Admissions Criteria
To pursue the certificate, students must be concurrently admitted to and enrolled in a graduate degree program in the Department of History and Geography.
