Minor in Museum Studies
About This Program
The minor in Museum Studies provides students from a variety of disciplines the opportunity to build a range of skills related to fine arts museum systems. Areas of study include museum administration, collection building and management, curatorial design and exhibition display, art historiography and history of conservation science, as well as fundraising and community outreach. The minor complements any major at UTA, with special relevance to students studying Art, Art Education, Art History, Architecture, Business, Communication, History, and Library Sciences. Undeclared majors may not apply.
Competencies
- Upon graduation, students will be able to apply foundational principles of curation and design in the creation of temporary exhibitions within UTA galleries and research collections spaces.
- Upon graduation, students will be able to apply critical thinking and communication skills across a range of arts publication formats, including museum didactics and labels as well as collections database catalogue entries.
- Upon graduation, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in art preservation, maintenance, and presentation, including the use of related technologies such as virtual exhibition modeling.
- Upon graduation, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic collection administration, building, and management skills, including the use of related technologies such as museum database management systems.
Curriculum
Students interested in the Museum Studies minor should consult the Art & Art History Department advising office to determine the most advantageous selection of courses. In addition to the 18 hours listed below, 6 hours of prerequisites should be chosen from ART 1309, ART 1310, or ART 1317; however, these prerequisites may be waived or substituted with the permission of program instructors.
