Certificate in Cinematic Arts Production
About This Program
The Certificate in Cinematic Arts Production at the University of Texas at Arlington is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level roles in film and television. Taught by both UTA faculty and seasoned industry professionals, this program offers a comprehensive foundation in film production. Key areas of study include film storytelling, producing, cinematography, sound, pre-production, post-production, safety protocols, and set etiquette. The curriculum emphasizes practical experience through hands-on film shoot exercises and assignments.
Competencies
- Upon completion, students will understand, be able to communicate, apply to specific projects the narrative principles of cinematic storytelling such as narrative structure, character development, and visual storytelling.
- Upon completion, students will understand all stages of film production, including pre-production, production, and post-production, the interplay between these stages, their impact on the final product as well as the roles (crews and positions) and responsibilities involved in each stage.
- Upon completion, students will demonstrate familiarity with the main aspects of the film making process such as visual storytelling, art design, and editing in the creation of a compelling story.
- Upon completion, students will demonstrate readiness to effectively fulfill a production assistant position in a film set, which includes knowledge of industry norms and expectations regarding behavior on set, effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and adherence to hierarchical structures.
- Upon completion, students will demonstrate readiness to be a production assistant in a film office by having thorough understanding of the basic task of a film office such as scheduling, documentation/forms, and daily workflow.
Admissions Criteria
UTA students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have completed 30 hours of coursework. Applicants will be reviewed by the Cinematic Arts Area Coordinator within the Department of Art and Art History.

Program Completion
The students will be required to fulfill 15 hours of coursework and must earn a C or better for the required courses to be counted towards the Cinematic Arts Production Certificate.
