The diversity, ecology and evolution of microorganisms in natural systems. Topics will include the role of bacteria and fungi in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems; microbial biogeography; taxonomic and metabolic diversity; evolutionary diversification; and interactions among microbes and with plant and animal hosts. Prerequisite: BIOL 2444 or BIOL 3444.
